With 100% cotton, this piece represents the sacredness of motherhood in all its forms, using an African Caribbean lens for analysis. Motherhood relates to biological, adoptive and/or other mothering expressions of love, care and attention. Motherhood is representative of many things. It is a biological and physiological natural function of the female body; it is an ideology in ways we conceptualize the purpose and expressions of motherhood; and an institution whereas a mother may yield benefit from her community, as she is revered. Motherhood embodies community, labour (be it physical or emotional) and resistance in our histories and contemporary lived-experiences of African and African diasporic peoples.
The colors chosen for this piece are blue and white to pay homage the Yoruba Orisha Yemaya, the mother of all Yoruba Orishas. Yemaya represents fertility, motherhood and the protection of children. The blue represents water, a life source and the seven seas.
Each textile is handmade and may have subtle differences in its appearance. It is recommended to dry clean to maintain the vibrancy of the colours.
